The Garage 56 project represents a remarkable collaboration between NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet, Goodyear, and IMSA, combining the expertise of NASCAR’s most successful team, manufacturer, and tire.

A Special Edition Camaro for Road and Track Usage

Mark Reuss, General Motors President, expressed Chevrolet’s enthusiasm, stating, “Even though Chevrolet has been racing since its inception in 1911, we’ve never done anything quite like Garage 56.”

This groundbreaking race car initiative began when NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France recognized an opportunity to showcase the NASCAR Next Gen car’s capabilities globally. The Garage 56 class, reserved for innovative and exceptional vehicles, proved the perfect platform to test a NASCAR Cup Series car’s endurance and performance in a 24-hour race.

Finding the Right Team

Hendrick Motorsports, an esteemed partner of Chevrolet and a record-holder in NASCAR Cup Series championships and race wins, was chosen to construct and field the Garage 56 Camaro ZL1 race car. The driver lineup features legendary names like Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula One World Champion, and Mike Rockenfeller, a multiple Le Mans winner.

Drawing from Chevrolet’s extensive experience and success at Le Mans through Corvette Racing, the Motorsports Competition Engineering team contributed invaluable insights to optimize the Garage 56 race car.

Notably, the Garage 56 Camaro ZL1 showcases the power and distinctive sound of the R07 Small Block V-8 engine. This engine variant is designed specifically for the 24-hour endurance race and delivers exceptional performance and durability.

What Goes into the Garage 56 ZL1?

Specific modifications were made to transform the Cup Camaro into the Garage 56 race car, including functional lighting, enhanced aerodynamics, and a striking livery. In collaboration with Hendrick Motorsports, the GM Motorsport Design Studio expertly translated the race car’s essence onto the track-ready Camaro.

Only 56 of these exceptional vehicles will be produced for the U.S. market, ensuring its status as a rare gem among automotive enthusiasts. For the full story from Chevrolet, please click here. For info on a Camaro you can get your hands on right now, follow the link below.
